Locations
Billabong Sports Fishing can offer the best fishing available by offering the best locations backed up by good service and local knowledge.
Hinchinbrook FNQ

Hinchinbrook Island is located about 2 hours drive south of Cairns. The area is renowned for it’s beauty and rugged tropical landscapes, also for it’s fishing both inshore lure and flyfishing, Barramundi, Permit etc and offshore Black Marlin and Giant Trevally popper fishing.
The inside of the island is lined with a maze of huge estuary systems running the entire length, some 50 kilometres. Miles of mangrove lined mudflats and sand flats make this one of the countries best sight fishing locations.
Offshore is recognised as one of the best light tackle Marlin and Sailfish grounds and is the number one spot for GT popper fishing, a sport that is huge overseas and will soon grab hold here. The area has many options and we can tailor a trip to suit your needs.
Cape York
The Cape is certainly one of the last wilderness areas the country has to offer. The fishing can be mind blowing, the species endless and the serenity, so much serenity.
We access the Cape via Weipa, reliable flights, better services, better fishing etc.
The Cape is very inaccessible by land so a mothership is a must if you wish to fish the untouched areas, the mothership is a 54ft Catamaran. With a/c, bathrooms and all the comforts of home, towing three 5m sportsfishers powered by 4stroke outboards and MinnKota thrusters.
Our mothership season runs from late March through to December, travelling north along the coast there are endless fishing opportunities. Walking the beach fly rod in hand casting to sighted fish of numerous species to charging offshore trolling or casting to schools of crashing pelagics. Some people wish to spend their whole week exploring the many rivers casting to mangroves and mud drains catching Barramundi, Salmon, Fingermark, Mangrove Jack etc
Whatever you choose to enjoy is up to you and we’ll do our best to put you in the right spot.
All our guides are very professional and leaders in their field. A maximum of six anglers keeps the service very personalised.
Western Cape/Archer River

The Archer River system is also on the west coast of Cape York, it is serviced by daily flights but that’s about were it stops, the area is very remote and has very little fishing pressure.
Using a houseboat style mothership as our base. The mothership caters for 4 to 6 anglers, using 3 five metre boats to navigate the huge estuary systems, beaches and rocky headlands. All the species found on the Cape live here and it’s an especially good area for Barramundi and Threadfin Salmon. The season is similar to Weipa April to November. Trips can be catered to suit from 4-7 days or extended if needed.
Papua New Guinea

Trips targeting Black and Spot tail bass, the kings of the river. Five days fishing PNG rivers in a remote location with all the comforts of home. Lodge style accommodation, run by the local village. Very friendly and safe location, excellent fishing and certainly a trip to remember.
Bass will grow up to 40 plus kg, these are seriously mean fish. Other species include GTs to 20kg, Mangrove Jack and Qld Gropers. But it’s the Bass we’re there to catch, rated number one in the world on fight per kilo.
Christmas Island
The Bone fish meca of the pacific, using long established local guides and accomodation we can take you to a place every fly fisher should experience at least once in their life. The Bonefishing is all sightfishing, wading sand and coral flats targeting these little speedster, they are everything they are written up to be and more. The average Bonefish is perhaps 3-4lbs, but you will experience 5-7 lb fish regularly enough during the trip to get you on edge.

These 5-7 lb fish often in less than a foot of water will peel line of you like you forgot to do the drag up, taking up to 100 yards in his first run. This last trip I personally saw 6 fish that had to be well into double figures.
The trips are a week in duration, there is only one flight per week. 7 days fishing with the option of fishing the last half day, nearly everyone does, it’s that addictive !!
